Study: Unruly kids No. 1 reason 133 Temple ISD teachers quit

Unruly student behavior at Temple schools is the No. 1 reason why teachers are leaving the district, an administrator told the board of trustees Monday evening.

Since July 7, 2015, the Temple Independent School District has lost 133 teachers from the 2015-16 school year, including some who did not even complete 90 days.

Joe Palmer, the district’s assistant superintendent of human resources, discussed the district’s study about teacher retention and said the goal for the 2016-17 school year is to improve the turnover rate for all campuses in the district to less than 20 percent.

Palmer reviewed five district goals and how it plans to achieve better teacher retention.

The first is to improve student behavior on campuses. Palmer said the No. 1 reason why teachers leave TISD is because of student disciplinary issues and failure to follow through on referrals by administration.

“What we are looking at is a new training program,” Palmer said. “It will be different than anything we’ve ever done in a sense that it is taking these new teachers and working with them almost like a one-on-one sitting and pulling them through different situations.”
